I find it pretty easy to imagine Lucario being like Fire Emblem's Camus, a honorable man who is fighting for a cause he doesn't fully trust anymore, yet he made his pledge already, and his honor forbids him from backing out of the war. I'd guess when it has to go the more villainous route, you could play up the arrogance and pride aspect a bit more. Have him believe more in that the cause he is fighting for is a just one, no matter what. Could also be juxapositioned that he still cares deeply for the people he is fighting for, even if it all ends up being for a unjust cause.
