I don't think its just that the games received a kind of lukewarm reception, and have become more and more infamous as time went on for even just slightly mixing up the formula, but I think Masuda probably drained all his creativity and passion on gen 5 and he doesnt have it in him anymore. He's also seen people will blindly eat up anything low effort as long as there's the right pandering and shilling involved so its not like he has any incentive to try anymore. The mass majority don't want innovation or passion, they just want something familiar and comfortable that doesnt try to challenge them or take them out of their comfort zone.
