Truth is that it's a very complicated situation than whether the pokemon are realistic or not.
One aspect has to do with the balance of cute / cool elements in the visual design of the pokemon. Most og 'mons like charmander have very cool elements that are balanced out properly like with softer rounded edges (cute) on the horns.
Also, a lot of the issues I have with newer designs come from how they just look unrefined. So many of them could be great with minor tweaks but gamefreak just didn't bother. So many look too complicated and messy. If they were stipped back a bit they'd look great.
Maybe gamefreak is just going for pokemon that stand out on a store plusshy isle rather than their logevity as a good design.
