But considering Sun and Moon started a trend of bringing back fairly obscure women in new contexts (even if Anabel's is weird), it would not be as tacky as it once was, and as a player character Crystal is effectively a blank slate. And as a GSC protag a particularly effective Professor Oak type- "I was kickass trainer when I was younger, but then I hit the top (oh man did I hit the tops!) and had to find something else to do."
