Hear me out, /vp/. We all remember Black & White's story as pretty stupid, right? How Plasma claimed Pokemon shouldn't be made to fight? See, I was particularly struck by how dumb the plot setup was, since I vividly remembered the gen 1 games' instruction manual stating that Pokemon enjoy battling and growing stronger. Today, I decided to actually check that my memory wasn't playing tricks on me, and I found myself in the right.
However, my manual is written in Finnish. I then looked for the Red/Blue/Yellow manuals in English on the Internet, and it turns out the specific parts I'm talking about were a bit different.
A rough translation of what's in the Finnish manual under "The World of Pokemon"
>What are Pokemon?
>There are known to be at least a hundred different species of Pokemon. The will to battle is in their nature, and by battling their skills grow.
This is the same thing in the English manual:
>WHAT ARE POKEMON?
>In this world there are more than 100 Pokemon. They gain experience and become more powerful as they fight against each other.
You can see where I'm going with this. Any other Europoors with manuals in other languages who feel like checking? I feel that this one changed sentence has coloured my whole view of the franchise (and I don't think I'm wrong just yet, there's more evidence elsewhere that points to captured Pokemon not just suffering from Stockholm syndrome/brainwashing like some people want to believe). Any English natives feel like chiming in? I find this shit really interesting.
