But that was when the direction on the franchise started to change, and Pokémon character designs (both monsters and humans) started losing a lot of definition. Sugimori's new style is much more suited to pair with merchandise, but it's a real downgrade in terms of artistic merit. Maybe he was aping off of Toriyama, but that isn't necessarily a bad thing.
