Honestly, though, I don't think the width of the nameplate is too important here. The player's Pokémon will barely be touched by it, and double battles are cramped anyway. Still, if it's possible to make it smaller, it should be done. That slanting is the main contributor to the extra width; perhaps the top part's slant could be steeper and the pointy part at the bottom be a bit narrower to lessen the effect.
One important thing to note is that, in the default nameplate, the HP numbers have a row all to themselves. While it makes the nameplate a bit taller, that's okay because there's space and it keeps the width down. The reason it's on its own row, though, is that it can be removed for double battles (along with the Exp bar), thus shrinking the height as much as possible and allowing two nameplates to be displayed more easily. The appearance of nameplates in double battles is definitely something that should be considered.
>>18910405That suggestion is invalid so long as the player is able to choose which font to use. I don't really agree that the font should be an option, but it's been one since forever which is why it's still in Essentials.
