Makes sense because otherwise you end up with shit that are like literally Digimon. Which is fine, I like Digimon too it just doesn't need to be every series.
Just because AC/DC and Metallica are both technically rock music doesn't mean they need to sound exactly the same and if they did that'd be fucking boring and entirely uncreative on their part.
Every series should stand out and Sugi's oversight accomplishes that well in the case of Pokémon.
