His own company goes on to release one of the most profitable mobile games in history. It was more successful in a year than any single Game Freak RPG. They did this using only the classic Pokemon, and without even needing basic features like trade or battles. The concept of catching Pokemon "in real life" simply caught like wildfire. For some people this was even their introduction or re-introduction to the brand. Because everyone has a phone, but they may not have a $100+ Nintendo system. Its no wonder SwSh was such a lackluster game when they didn't even have faith in the fucking industry anymore.
Series is only now starting to course correct because they realized that people actually like video games after all.
