A game with straight up just the devil isn't as fun to attack. Especially back then when everyone would agree. Something being questionable causes debate, it allows them to prove themselves. That'd why with say D&D they'd go oh the books make you go crazy and kill your friends! Not just hey this features demons could you remove them.
