On that note as one of the artfags here, I really see no harm in using stuff like bases or memes as a jumping off point if more standard references like photos or 3d models aren't sufficient/readily available. I'd love to recommend specific channels but I don't actually keep up with any unfortunately, most of what I learned early on was less from guided lessons and more watching speedpaints from artists I already liked and trying to break down what it was they were doing.
