I started with gen 1 and I absolutely ADORE gen V. because it feels like a throwback, but modernized and done right, new ideas, but the same kind of feeling. Something I feel gen 3 and 4 just didn't capture as well.
5 is easily my favorite. it added a lot of thing that people wanted for ages. Unlimited TMs, Animated sprites, More post game content, And the sequels added stuff like PWT which gave it tons of replayability and longetivity.

And this is where I will ask, why? Personally, V is my favorite dex. And I was like you once. When Gen V was first announced, I loathed the idea because i thought "How are they gonna top god? Are they going to go the yugioh demi-god route?" When I went to the B/W mall tour here in CA 5 years ago, I saw all the leaked designs and instantly fell in love with more then half the dex. As much as I like gen 4, I get sad everytime I replay them because I realize i can't have my favorites like Galvantula, Golurk, Cofagrigus, Klingklang, etc.
I'll admit some designs like vaniluxe are weird, but i'd hardly call them bad. If anything they're remeniscent of Gen 1, Magnemite/Klink, Dugtrio/Vanilluxe Trubbish/Grimer etc.
In a way, Gen V felt like a reboot of Gen 1, but with new ideas and designs, first gen to ever feature a non-regional pokedex and actually encourage using the new regions mons over fan favorites.
