Should they have built it up as much as they did? No, it was pretty much just yanking everyone's chain. That was especially bad on the marketing team, and building up AshNinja was a poor choice of the writers. But anyone who's seen the specials and has seen what Zard X is capable of shouldn't have expected any of Ash's Kalos Pokemon to be even close to capable.
Oh, and Serena's not going to stay for Alola, the new girl has already been confirmed in artwork.
