Like the spin-off games One of my pet peeves is seeing more "realistic" pokemon like spearow show up next to cartoony pikipek. Either art direction is fine (arguably) as long as they're the same.
This way, there's more leeway in the designs, more room for creativity and adjustment, more chances to see the appeal of a pokemon.
Basically I wish every pokemon had as much design range as pikachu
