Evolution data states that at one point Girafarig was part of a 3 stage line, so what I suspect happened was that the baby Girafarig was the Basic, The final design was the stage 1 and the 97 sprite was the stage 2, called mitei05 in the evo data, something like this.

Girafarig lost out hard too. We never rid find a front sprite for the prevo, but with evo data for a 3-stage line for it and the way the tail grows from a single ball to a while other head it's possible that this was going to be a line at some point between Spaceworld and the final.

With Girafarig's beta design, Minifarig's beta backsprite and beta evolution data for a Stage 2 Girafarig evo it seems as though this line may have once been a thing, only to be replaced by its middle stage with no evidence that a full 3-stage evolutionary line ever existed.

Imagine if Girafarig had got to be a unique 3 stage line in the final instead of a single-stage generic deer thing everyone forgets about because it wasn't even the main deer in Johto.
