Because just think about this. The disaster that was the Kalos League Finals and the end of XY in general is literally the reason why SM and JN changed the format and formula so drastically. If not for that incredibly intense backlash from said events, we would've never gotten the kino that was SM's last year and ending or Ash legit taking on the strongest trainers in the world with him and his ld firend having gone forward in their Pokemon careers now.
All of that happened because of XY just as XY happened because of BW. Those two seasons were the necessary steps and sacrifices needed to scare the ones in charge into changing the status quo. We literally would have never reached this point without those two.
