>>54839722I played through Crystal recently, here's my opinion of the Johtomons I used. I boxed a lot of them, but that was usually more due to me karenfagging than the Pokémon being too weak:
>TotodileIt was a decent but not amazing workhorse Pokemon as starters tend to be. Never evolved it into Feraligatr, but I do know that Gatr was massively held back in pre-split gens by the fact it was a physical attacking mono-water type.
>SpinarakSucks. Ariados' attack is decent but all of it's other stats are not, and it doesn't learn any decent attacking moves without HMs. Aside from night-shade, but that still renders it's attack stat a moot point.
>PhanpyDoesn't learn any decent moves aside from Rollout which is non-stab. Donphan doesn't get any good moves until level 49 when it finally learns Earthquake. HMs don't even help much.
>DunsparceSurprisingly good. It's bulkier than you expect and can even do some good damage if you teach it headbutt. It can even doing do real bruising with rage, which it learns by level up, since it's bulky enough to take the hits to power it up.
>QuagsireEnded being my team's MVP. It's super bulky and it learns good STAB moves so it hits fairly hard too. You can also teach it Ice Punch by buying a TM in goldenrod, which gives it decent coverage.
>HeracrossDoesn't get any decent STAB moves (except for Megahorn, but it doesn't get that until like level 55), but it's attack stat is so high that it's still going to hit like a truck with the moderately strong non-stab moves it learns.
>SkarmoryAmazing, as you'd expect. It's level-up movepool is pretty lame, but if you teach it sleep talk and rest it can stall things out for days.
