I guess it boils at BW being the last DS and 2D tittle while XY is teh first 3D and 3DS title.
Both are sort of a franchise reboot in their own ways, BW has only gen V pokemon until the postgame and besides the tie-in gen IV events mon than can be transfered. also first mainline game with a non-japan inspired region. people will what they call objectmons and turner mons in this game or call it the game that killed 2D pokemon
XY is the introduction of the genrational gimmicks, 3D and the fairy types. Rather than trying to distanced themself from past games, XY does a lot of past generations reference and especially KANTOOOOOOOOOO. To this day people still feel striongly about mega evos and fairy type.
