The major contributing factor is that OS wasn't afraid to treat the world as if time were passing. The dialogue in the current dub is incredibly stilted and the characters in XY and SM come off as tropey as all fuck
90% of praise I hear about XY is about the fact that it confirmed a ship with some bitch who a bulbapedia skim reveals to have no real personality other than fucking shipping. I'd have half a mind to say that should Serena or Lillies designs be massively different than what they are, those types of fans would have little to no interest.
Pokemon is about a scrappy kid who just wants to be a badass not some fucking ace trainer who fails all the time because muh MARKETING
