I've yet to meet a single long time fan who actually prefers gen 1, it's way too plain and simple. Game Freak only shoehorns it in because it's popular and Pokemon's a brand first and a series second. The original 151 are incredibly iconic because they came first so of course they're going to give them mega evolutions, alolan forms, and every single little gimmick to squeeze as much nostalgia as possible from normies wallets.
Ultimately it's a middle finger to the long time fans, the reality is Game Freak doesn't care. You're out of the demographic, you're not a dumb kid and you're not a normie who played Pokemon once when he was 8 so he thinks it's a good buy for little Billy.
