No matter what, remain patient and keep at it; finding any shiny at any time is simply a matter of luck and willpower, not by the actions or inactions you take in the game.
Keep in mind that encountering one will ALWAYS be a 1 in 8000 chance approximately, no matter how thoroughly you sweep any forest/dungeon/location. That said, BE READY with team players that can quickly subdue the shiny with either Sleep or Paralysis effects or use moves like Mean Look to prevent its escape if it attempts to flee in battle. You need not fight it with any damage-dealing moves, as doing so may destroy your chances, but ALWAYS have enough balls on hand for the capture, as it will struggle easily.
Keep in mind the different balls and their capabilities. For example, I know a lot of people give Kurt a really hard time for making shitty balls, but if you're diligent enough and stock up on enough of them, HOLY SHIT they come in handy (especially Level and Love Balls, which can, if used correctly, multiply your catch rate by 8).
And be prepared to make the judgment call to sacrifice your master ball for that shiny Electrode.
As far as easing the burden of simply sitting there and wasting the day, go easy on yourself: casually multitask by watching a movie (an epic, for example, like The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly), listening to music, playing a passive game like online poker, or heck, simply sitting outside and getting some fresh air and sun to kill time as you search. Trust me, it REALLY does make a difference.
