If you're like Ash and just living care-free with no responsibility except pokemon training, a year sounds like a pretty reasonable timeframe to raise up 5-6 pokemon, even including rest and leisure.
Even with the obscure passage of time in the anime, i'm pretty sure each season isn't happening over the course of several years, and Ash can go from just pikachu to having another team of 4-5 pokemon fairly well trained to take on the league by the end of a season, showing that it's clearly feasable to get that strong within ~half a year with a bit of protagonist luck.
