Also we need to dispute Tamagotchi here. Digimon World 1, the first Digimon game for PSX was balla as fuck. It took Tamagotchi type gameplay and expanded it into a 3D environment. There was time management, there was training, battling, feeding, taking it to the shitter, pretty much taking care of a pet. You then made it badass and cool by battling other monsters and learning techniques.
All Range Beam + DG Dimension + Full Potential became a huge OP as fuck tank when you got to Mech classed Ultimate digimon like Metalgreymon. Megadramon was OP as fuck too because he had access to Ice Statue.
Had they followed that formula in the later games and tweaked it, I'm confident it would've been a good game to compete with Pokemon.
