James is seen being able to defeat pokemon by kicking them and being okay even though his pokemon are always hurting him/trying to show affection by harming him like a bunch of tsunderes.
I'm pretty sure that alongside their genes, humans have a symbiotic lifestyle with pokemons at this point in history, seen that some evolutions can only happen when traded or holding certain human made item.
