I left after I couldn't be arsed to finish Platinum, everything was so mind-numbingly slow and the new Pokémon looked disgusting.
Only got back into it when I bought HG last year in the summer, initially only for the Pokéwalker because I wanted to start running (what happened to that, anyway?). Fell in love with the series again, played on Showdown with friends, bought Black 2 as well and finished it just in time before Y came out.
I replayed Platinum recently and beat it this time, still think it's shit tho.
The appeal of having strong little pets to go on an adventure with is timeless. Especially when you don't get out much, you really bond with your Pokémon, and it's satisfying seeing them grow stronger under your guidance.
More than that, competitive battling (and the breeding that goes along with it) tickles my autism. Pokémon has a lot of depth in multiplayer, and it's stimulating to think of new teams, trying to maintain a strong synergy while being prepared for the most common threats.
