You can say what ever you want about SM not being an actual Pokemon show or just a spin off but unless they had something else running people are going to see it as the supposed successor to XY.
If SM was released in the same way as Chronicles people would probably be somewhat more accepting and happy with it.
I tried my hardest not to compare it to something else in the same situation.
