XY I feel is like the FE13 of this series. It was built to be a fun, casual romp with tons of fanservice to cast as wide a net as possible to put the series back in people's minds. And honestly, people loved shit like Pokemon Amie, creating their own character, or speculating about Mega Evolution. The multiplayer scene had never been better thanks to PSS and faster grinding, so more people started to dip their toes into that side of the game. HMs are basically never required, and the maps are easy to traverse. Pokemon from every Generation scattered across the map so you can build whatever party you want. It's like the most inoffensive game.
