Sorry but I don't buy it, there might not be any new megas and they could very easily be a post game addition but I highly, HIGHLY doubt they would remove them.
At least other mechanics like following Pokemon and the Battle Front didn't directly effect battle. And every battle mechanic added thus far has been kept or at least reworked.
