The series artist has admitted that he has changed design philosophy over the years. The Pokemon from earlier gens were designed differently from the ones that came after. Hell, character design is visibly different from what it used to be. The original game director also handed control to someone else and the games themselves took on a new direction in some areas. The series shifted from being a reflection of Tajiri's own personal childhood in Japan with the addition of strange monsters with magic powers and became wild adventures in themepark-esque regions where the evil teams are trying to control god-pokemon that control/represent the very forces of nature so they can take over the world. People are naturally going to like the old stuff compared to the new stuff and vice-versa.
