though with hacking registers during display you can get up to 2000 colors at the same time. Whether or not you have any time left for logic and room for all the tiles and color info is another matter. Remember, the GBC can do 8mb cartridges. Probably the problem here will be that you will have low frame rate and lots of gliches.
