I'm not from the US, but sadly the US measures everything from their own point of view, and they have an incredible influence over the rest of the world, at least on the internet. So you get things like pic related: americans freaking out at the word "negro" because they can only understand it as racist, when it's actually a completely inoffensive word in many places, and in fact an affectionate term in some Spanish speaking countries.
