Back when I played Black on emulator using a cracked Japanese ROM a full year ahead of release, I didn't like any starters besides maybe Snivy, and even then it was begrudginly. All the starters were either odd looking or bland at the same time, Emboar especially looked like a downie Ganondorf moblin thing and it was the only dual type, but it was YET again a fucking Fire/Fighting type. I didn't like Samurott at all either. I thought his evolution from white, to eye searingly bright light blue, to dark as hell dark blue, didn't make sense to me. I also didn't even realize it was based off a samurai despite the naming scheme. And what especially soured me on it ultimately was the fact that it was pure Water. After being used to the last 2 gens having cool type combos like Water/Steel and Water/Ground I was really disappointed.
But then when I found out it could do crazy shit like this
>>46442710 and this
>>46442811 I began to give it a second chance and it has finally warmed up to me. I mean, the fact that it looked so impotent on all fours like that for me also turned me off, but it's actually the fact that it does that retarded bipedal stance WITH those scallop swords I was previously not even aware of, that makes it so unique to me. It's so stupid that it's actually amazing. It's not something that tries to be unique but fails spectacularly at getting your imagination jogging (Like Inteleon's lame "finger gun" shooting water from the tip). It's unexpected and actually badass. When a Pokémon looks unassuming and suddenly does crazy shit like that, it's truly something special. I didn't learn until much later that the Unova starters were based on different regions of nobility.
And yes honestly now that all of this is made apparent I wish it was Water/Fighting. Farfetch'd becomes pure Fighting just because it fights with a sword, HELL in that same gen Samurott was in they had an entire troupe of fucking quadruped horses that had Fighting tacked onto it...
