I have beaten E4 with overlevelled Blastoise and random Pokemon found along the way. Zapdos was not one of them, because after yet another unsuccessful attempt to catch it, I browsed through my PC boxes searching for a Drowzee and accidentally saved, making it impossible to go back before the encounter.
I also remember disliking the anime even back then, because it didn't really care about game mechanics.
Gen V was the pinnacle of the series and we'll never again get anything as good.
