I think the difference that's creating a dissonance for you is the TYPE of relationship, not the quality.
Ash and Go's relationship is that of two children, partners on equal standing. They help each other grow but since they're equals one can't grow past the other, so it gives the illusion that there's no influence. but they're still growing and have chemistry.
Clemont and Ash come from a of rivals, but also a big brother and little brother relationship. When Ash helps clemont grow and vice versa their influence and character development is more noticeable because they're growing from different places at different rates thanks to each other. Clemont and Ash's relationship is certainly better developed, hell they wrote a song about it.
But Ash and Go isn't bad and I can understand someone preferring it. Not everything has to be a grand character study.
