what made megaevolution so special is that only a few pokemon could, the kinds of beedrill, mawile and lopunny where completely redeemed, and not even that, you had to SACRIFICE other megas when deciding to use them.
seeing someone prioritize using mega-beedrill or mega-glalie instead of the likes of mega-blaziken just screams devotion and love to that pokemon.
Z-moves already covered what Dynamax is trying to cover too, being able to give "something a little more special" to your signature pokemon which could not mega-evolve, and it was even cooler in a choreographic concept, it was taking attack animations to more extreme level that was typical from jrpgs but not present in pokemon, it was the second step to the process that megas defined.
just imagine, we could have gotten more megas, like mega flygon, or more exclusive z-moves, just like kommo-o got redeemed with clangorous soulblaze, hydreigon or goodra could also have gotten z-moves that let them come back stronger than ever.
instead we get "IT JUST GETS BIGGER LOL"
