See, one of the funny things about the Tobias battle is that Ash had a Pokemon that perfectly countered Tobias' Darkrai. Primeape's Vital Spirit, high attack, decent speed and Fighting type allows it to take Darkrai's hits, avoid Dark Void's sleep effect, and hit it back for constant super effective damage. It had a niche in Gen 4 Ubers for this very reason, since Darkrai's Dark Void kept putting other Legendaries to sleep before they could counter it. Unfortunately Ash made the dumbass decision to get rid of his Primeape only three or four episodes after he caught it (after an episode of beating the shit out of all of his Pokemon except Charmander).

If it happens, say a year from now, the landscape may be completely different. Just go on a side adventure to Unova, have Roy encounter Keldeo and the Three Musketeers and battle one of the Explorers in the Desert Resort (or wherever). Long shot: Iono and Elesa team up.
