You might have a point if pokemon was a story driven game, but gamefreak needs to go all out to produce a plot I'd charitably call half-assed and poorly explored, but not many people buy pokemon for the content before the credits roll.
The most nonsensical part of the argument is the whole smartphone bit-- If someone owns a 3DS, surely that means they actively WANT to play something other than shitty mobile games. It shows a complete lack of faith in one's product to say something like that. No shit people are going to turn off pokemon and play angry birds when you don't give them a reason to keep playing.
