Almost all the Mega Evolutions at first were Gen 1 Pokemon, all the Alolan Forms were Gen 1 Pokemon, we keep seeing Charizard game after game, etc. This rejection of 'what Game Freak thinks we want' helps make people resent the game these Pokemon came from and everything they represent to fans.

AKA people who were only really into Pokemon during Pokemania and think that still playing it is dumb and that there's no reason to play anything other than Yellow. Like I say, these hardly exist anymore unironically but they exist as boogeymen that represent the worst of Gen 1's defenders

If you started with Gen 2, 3, even 4 or later, it can be really hard to go back to Gen 1 and understand why people liked it in the first place. It's easier to see Gen 1 as "an inferior version of later Gens" rather than thinking of it as the first Gen that all the other games come from. This is pretty common with really anything media-related, it's hard to see why people thought Ocarina of Time was a contender for best game of all time when they've already played the games that built off of it, same for Super Mario Bros., the original Legend of Zelda, etc.
