Humans have a menstrual cycle so our females are always receptive to fertilization, while animals with estrus cycles are only receptive to fertilization in certain periods. I think they're most comparable to animals like birds and salamanders though, who have internal ovaries that produce unshelled eggs and are fertilized internally. Animals like that seem to have annual mating periods but I don't know what triggers them and what changes their bodies go through during them.
