Back then, minimum wage could support a single person pretty well with necessary utilities for the time, and you only had to compete for jobs against the immediate area; telecommuting wasn't a thing. Plus, shit was cheap as hell. When I worked at a bagel store last year, old people were the #1 complainers that a tuna salad sandwich cost more than $5, and without a large soda, because in their minds, it's still the 50s when you could legit get a steak for just $3.
