In any other JRPG, having 18 types and possible dual-type (162 combinations?) seems like way too many, and in Gen 1 it shows, with mistakes such as having more Grass/Poison species than pure Grass and the only Ghost-type family being dual-type. But as the franchise kept going and hundreds more species were added, it makes perfect sense and is part of the appeal of Pokémon games. I can't imagine how the current games would work with fewer types.
