Greninja doesn't have enough time to react to the speeding tortoise. Torkoal rams into him with a thrashing charge, roasting and ripping through him with bursting lava on impact.
"J-Jaaaaa!"
Greninja is thrown aside, hitting the ground hard. Torkoal doesn't wait for him to get back up, instead he stops, turns around, and begins to rev himself up again for a return trip. Your options are beginning to dwindle.
"Greninja, get up, don't give up so soon! You can do it! Try a Blizzard!"
Usually Fire-type attacks don't even scrape Greninja that bad--resistances and all--but that sudden Flame Wheel coming off a good rest really did a number on him. Perhaps the only bright side to it is that the pain from all the sensitive burn marks has completely done away with any post-sleep drowsiness.
Recovering, Greninja leaps forward conjures up a frosty storm to chill down the tortoise. Unfortunately, he's simply too hot to handle to be frozen that easily. The cold front is melted by Torkoal's protective cloak of flames, and once again he zooms off to mow Greninja down again.
You're no sciencey guy and your journey is definitely not aiming to be an accurate representation on how elements actually work, but you're pretty sure that steam--specifically the muggy steam inside Torkoal's shell powering him up--has water in it, and that same water can be frozen.
It's long shot but wilder things have happened before. Now if only you can find a way to put a complete stop to Torkoal's Flame Wheel shenanigans, maybe stun him so you can get a good aim at that shell..
