Outside of Nintendo/Game Freak shilling ones like Charizard or Greninja there really isn't anything bad about them.
I mean sure their stats can be shit sometimes but starters were never meant to be competitively viable, they're meant to carry you through singleplayer.
Also the reason everyone's always so callous about it is because they're doing exactly what they're supposed to do. We get attached to one particular one each gen, which makes the others look like shit in comparison.
It's like favoring our own pets over others'. We love them, and thus we think they're better than the others, so we get pissy when someone doesn't share the love.
