Wulfric's really the only one you can say has no background but even then you see more of him so you learn a bit about him. Clemont being a companion already solves your issue about him as well.
The Kahunas being great characters are moot when the battles are terribly done. Not to mention the gym experience of the five mentioned also help Ash. A lot of gym leaders are great but then you sometimes get them having shitty battles. The Kahunas were no exception.
