Nihilego's name is a combination of two Latin words; "nihil" and "ego." Nihil means "nothing," and is the root of nihilism and nihilist. "Ego" means "I," and is also part of one of Sigmund Freud's most famous psychology theories.
Sigmund Freud posited that human psyche was comprised of three parts that together dictated human behavior: "das Es," "das Über-Ich," and "das Ich," or the Id, the Superego, and the Ego, as translated by James Strachey. The Id is the part of the psyche dealing with survival and instinct, the Superego handles a longing for critical/moral behavior within defined social norms, and the Ego deals with rational decision-making and one's sense of self.
So, what does this mean for Nihilego? Nihilego's name thus means "I am nothing" - both referring to how it has only an Id (driven solely by instinct, a desire to consume), and how it damages the minds of those it infects so that they only care about Nihilego.
