For those American's not in the know, because this is important, this is the fault of people overseas. This is the fault of Europe, specifically. When we had the merger that turned Pokemon US and Pokemon EU into Pokemon International a handful of changes occurred. It was right at the end of 4th gen for those who don't remember and it happened right before the localization of HGSS. After the merge they decided to hire different localization staffers who could do localization suitable for all regions. They hired from the EU pool, and in fact, most of the International company is now manned by EU staffers. This merge is what changed things like the names of items and places in HGSS and was responsible for Voltrob Flip replacing everything in the Johto game corner. After that Game Freak proper just decided not to do Game Corners anymore, because the rest of the world was getting a bum deal and the International company argued it was too taxing on localization staff. So if you want to blame someone for this, don't blame GF. It wasn't actually them. Blame the EU.
Oh, and the reason the EU hates game corners is because gambling raises the PEGI ruling to their equivalent of "Teen", and no one involved in the development of the series wants a Teen Pokemon game, apparently. And they're considered "gambling" exclusively by EU law. Apparently, any game in which you pay money to make a currency that can be exchanged for goods and services is considered gambling in the EU. I've never gotten a strait answer about it, but I think that includes arcades that give tickets. In strictly EU games, prior to the merger, the Game Corner was a fucking joke. You ran around collecting free tokens out of used machines, people would hand them to you, and you could buy them. But there was no way to play games to get more. It was basically impossible (or extremely expensive) to get anything out of a Game Corners prize exchange.
