Passing by yourself is pretty good, but what did the most was catching a fuckton of random pokemon and doing every single gts trade I possibly could on
pkmnclassic.net. I always had a magnemite for magnemite trade up and waiting.
Then it's just a matter of making sure to recommend correctly, pic related. After a while, you can figure out the obvious ones and memorize the arbitrary male/female ones. Like that one that says "Take me somewhere! Anywhere!" but is actually a filthy lie.
Another thing that helps is knowing that points don't carry over on a rank up, so try not to waste the 1000 points you get from gym leaders appearing on the avenue.
