Ultimately Hop doesn't really have much of a character to him besides his story arc. He doesn't show any personal interests besides being obsessed with his brother.
Even Hau's love for Malasada is something about him that's unrelated to Pokemon or anyone else.
Hau's character is that he's cheerful to a fault, afraid to take things seriously.
He hardly can handle what happened during the Aether raid, and yet still helps out anyways.
And by the end, he finally decides to try being serious, and accepts loss with a smile.
But yeah, it's just a matter of personal preference.
Hau is also just way cuter and has a better design than Hop, in my opinion.
