>>23323619>Maybe I don't like it because it makes no fucking sense (design wise)I see you're having some trouble visualizing the design. Let me break down the motif for you.
-The Froakie line is based on thieves.
-Japanese RPG's tend to convey ninjas as the highest rank a thief can achieve.
-Frogs are commonly associated with ninja lore because of Japanese folklore, namely Jiraiya and others.
The connection between species and concept is established. Onto the physiology. It borrows many tropes from common early ninja caricatures:
-Ninjas preferred to wear dark shades of blue in order to blend more believably in the dark of the night. Blue is commonly associated with water.
-Ninjas obscured facial features with masks as to avoid recognition, cloaking all but their eyes. The pale yellow highlights in its eye sockets mimicking the eyes being revealed even in silhouette.
-Ninjas are commonly depicted as wearing multipurpose scarves. The long tongue that frogs are famous for sporting was cleverly doubled as one. This way the accesory can be depicted naturally in an explainable manner, while adding the benefits of an actual versatile, prehensile limb instead of a mere hanging cloth.
-The stocked upper legs/skinny lower legs frogs have can also emulate the baggy pants ninjas wear.
Add to that all the obvious ninja weapon nods in the shurikens, substitutes, Smokescreens, spikes, etc. And you get a design that pays homage to its concept in a clever, simple and coherent way.
If you don't like a pokemon, simply say you don't like it. Criticizing something you never even gave a chance to begin with makes you look like a short-sighted, narrow minded prick. There's nothing wrong with disliking things even if you recognize their merits, as long as you actually DO recognize them.
