I would argue even when you were a kid there were girls into the battles part, I used to talk about watching both dragon ball and sailor moon with female friends in school. Now days though we live in a time period where girls grow up watching or reading all the shounen that the boys do. Mha, Demon Slayer, and even lowkey One Piece. This is also why almost every newer shounen has aspects of shoujo and why there are more and more female shounen creators. Fairy Tail is also a prime example of this. At it's core it never was a shounen to begin with but It pretended to be one
